Van Buren knocks off Cardinal in volleyball
ELDON — Hanna Haynes turned in her most dominant performance to date Wednesday, leading Van Buren past Cardinal in four sets in the opening round of Class 2A regional volleyball.
Haynes spiked down 25 kills while also tallying 16 digs and nine blocks as Van Buren toppled Cardinal by final scores of of 27-25, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-17 at Cardinal High School.
“She’s really turned it around,” Van Buren head coach Matt Zeitler said of Haynes. “She’s really played well the last six matches and she’s just beating on people.
“She may be one of the best kill people in the state.”
The 6-foot-3 Haynes assured Van Buren (13-16) a second-round matchup with area rival Pekin (15-14) next Tuesday.
Jordan Billups handed out 24 assists — most of them to Haynes — and served up two aces to go two blocks. Senior Payten Hughes and freshman Libby King dug up 14 balls each to lead the Warriors from the back row. Alicia Fitzsimmons was 18-of-20 from behind the service line.
“We’re going in the right direction, and now’s a good time to do it,” said Zeitler. “If we continue to play like that we have a real good shot against Pekin, I think.”
For the Comets, senior Lindsay Moore had 24 digs and two aces from the back row. Danae Moses supplied 22 assists, Leea Ostrander had 12 spikes and Delaney Ridgeway totaled eight kills and five blocks. Lexi Fullenkamp came through with nine digs.
The Comets were 10-16 overall in 2012.
The regional matchup between Van Buren and Pekin is set to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Eldon.
