Van Buren Players hosting 50th anniversary reunion
KEOSAUQUA — The Van Buren Players will host a 50th anniversary reunion from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Village Cup and Cakes in Keosauqua. Posters, programs, photographs and news clippings from 50 years of shows will be displayed, with a limited number of posters and programs available for scrapbooks. Mary Ovrom’s compilation of memories book also will be available for purchase.
Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.
The Van Buren Players is celebrating 50 years of musical theater. Its first production of “South Pacific” was presented in April 1963.
Originally organized by Maggie Miller and Etta K. Owen, there were several people in the area who thought a community production would be a great activity to pass the long winter months. Many community members came forward that first year, and the show was a rousing success. Buoyed by the response, the experiment continues.
Players have come from all around the county, neighboring counties and surrounding states. Some have participated in one show and some have been here for years. In 2010, the players presented a revival of its 1980 “Fiddler on the Roof” and there were 13 of the original cast and crew in the second show.
In March this year, the players presented three performances of “Chicago” to large, appreciative audiences.
“We look forward to the next show, and the challenges it will present, but we also want to take a look back at what has been accomplished,” said Kathy Paulek, a member of the Van Buren County Players. “Please join us for a casual get-together to see old friends, renew acquaintances, and reminisce.”
