Van Buren seniors come through
MORAVIA — Van Buren’s seniors stepped up in a big way to hand their team a 10-4 victory Monday in Moravia.
The school’s recent graduates went a combined 8-for-14 from the plate and totaled seven of the team’s 10 RBI in the non-conference game, much to the delight of second-year head coach Eric Speer.
“Last week we had a meeting about how they needed to step up, and they really showed what they’re capable of tonight,” Speer said.
One of its seniors, Jordan Billups, smacked a two-run home run and scored three times in the game. Jansen Heckenberg went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI; and fellow senior Hanna Haynes was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. A fourth senior, Payten Hughes, added a pair of hits and two RBI.
All but one of the Warriors’ 10 runs came in the fourth inning, as Hughes got the scoring started with a two-run double. Van Buren led 9-1 after the fourth and never looked back.
“The girls were hitting line drives in the gaps, and it’s something I’ve been waiting to see,” said Speer.
In the pitcher’s circle, Van Buren junior Alicia Fitzsimmons tossed all seven innings to pick up the win. Fitzsimmons gave up seven hits and three walks while fanning 10.
Next up for the Warriors (2-2, 1-2 SEISC South) is a game at Davis County today.
