Van Buren upends Comet girls; Cardinal boys rally
ELDON — Van Buren got back on the winning track with a dominant showing against rival Cardinal Tuesday.
The Warriors, coming off a loss to Burlington Notre Dame, thoroughly controlled Tuesday’s game from start to finish and won 62-28 in Eldon.
Hanna Haynes led the Warriors with another stellar stat line of 22 points, eight boards, six blocks and five steals. Kaitlyn Johnson scored 16 on four treys, and the sophomore handed out eight assists. Jordan Billups scored 10, Rider had six points and Payten Hughes grabbed seven boards.
Cardinal’s Lindsay Moore, a senior guard, scored 12 points. Freshman Delaney Ridgway scored 10 points and had two steals.
Van Buren (5-1) hosts Holy Trinity on Thursday before heading north to face Fairfield on Friday. Cardinal (2-5), meanwhile, hosts another rival, Pekin, Thursday.
Comet boys win
ELDON — A furious rally from the Cardinal boys’ basketball team lifted it to a 56-53 win over rival Van Buren Tuesday in Eldon.
Led by Charlie Rachford’s 14 points and Dakota Showman’s 11, the Comets came back from a nine-point deficit late in the third quarter. Cardinal held Van Buren to just four points in the final period.
Also for Cardinal, Jonathan Pedersen scored 10 and Kaleb Durflinger totaled 12 boards.
For the Warriors, Garrett Saunders led all scorers with 15 points, and Thomas Fitzsimmons wasn’t far behind with 14. Tanner Smith chipped in nine points.
Van Buren returns home to host Holy Trinity on Friday. Cardinal (3-2) hosts Pekin on Thursday.
