Van Buren upset by Burlington Notre Dame
Class 1A No. 3 Van Buren was upset 7-6 Saturday by Burlington Notre Dame in Danville.
The Warriors were seeking to win back-to-back district finals, but the loss will send them home much quicker than most anticipated.
Van Buren trailed 7-0 entering the seventh inning, and scored six times in the final frame. The flurry of runs in the final inning was the only time sophomore pitcher Xavier Williams wasn’t in control for the Nikes. Williams pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs.
Garrett Saunders went 2-3 and drove in two runs for the Warriors. Will Mertens and Noah Whitten both ripped a double.
Tyson Sprouse pitched the final 5 1/3 innings and fanned eight.
The Warriors (33-3) had not lost since June 27. No. 1 ranked Twin Cedars and Fairfield had been the only two teams to take down the Warriors the entire season.
Burlington Notre Dame (17-9) plays against Lone Tree Tuesday in the substate matchup.
