Video store manager deserves praise for hosting food bank
To the editor:
The Food Bank of South East Iowa came to Fairfield today, Feb. 23, looking for a place to park their truck and distribute food to families who need it. We all know at least one family that does.
I would like this letter to be entirely positive and most of it is. The first subject must be the Food Bank itself and the volunteers who give so much of their time and energy for an important cause.
The second would be the manager of our local Family Video outlet who graciously and generously made her parking lot available to the Food Bank truck and its customers.
It is also important to add that she gave a free video rental to everyone associated with the Food Bank in Fairfield – good business? Maybe, but no one would hardly know about it had I not written this letter and The Ledger decided to publish it.
The only downside in this wonderful story is that the Food Bank approached two, much larger businesses with much larger parking lots and customer bases on the west side of town. Each of these businesses declined to help the Food Bank by refusing to give them permission to park in their huge lots [by comparison with Family Video]
The purpose of this letter is to praise, not to criticize. But I think Fairfield can do better than this, and should next year.
And in the meantime, high praise is due Family Video and Brenda for not just saving the day but for representing our city in such a generous and kind way.
