Vogel, Cale win on first day of state wrestling
DES MOINES — As the first day of the individual state wrestling tournament closed for Class 1A wrestlers Thursday, Pekin’s Austyn Vogel and Cardinal’s Ryan Cale waded through all the chaos to earn first-round victories in their respective brackets.
Vogel, a returning state qualifier and senior, won by 13-11 sudden victory over Wilton’s Kaleb Schmidt to advance at 152 pounds. Cale, another returning qualifier, advanced in the 113-pound winner’s bracket by pinning Don Bosco’s Grant Barron in 4:58.
Both wrestlers will be competing again starting at 9 a.m. Friday.
Area wrestlers who fell victim to the tournament on the first day included Van Buren junior Jacob Heisel (126) and Cardinal senior Dustin Miller (182). Heisel was pinned in both his matches, while Miller fell by tech fall in the first round and later lost a 9-3 decision.
Fairfield seniors Seth Davisson and Jake Mineart, along with the rest of the Class 2A field, kick off the tournament today from 7-10:15 p.m.
