Vogel takes second at conference tournament
LONE TREE — Area wrestling teams were unable to crown any champions at Saturday’s SEISC wrestling tournament in Lone Tree, but one Pekin wrestler came close.
Pekin senior Austyn Vogel claimed two consecutive wins by fall to reach the championship match at 152 pounds, before losing to Bradley Conley of Mediapolis in the championship round by a 10-4 decision. The runner-up finish was Vogel’s second straight at the conference tournament.
Trenton Conger (195 pounds) finished third and Brandon Baayen (113) and Thomas Slaney (182) both claimed fourth-place for Pekin, which ended up eighth out of 12 teams with 73 points.
“I felt we should’ve been in fifth place. We had one wrestler injured, one who didn’t make weight and another who shouldn’t have finished fourth but did,” said Pekin head coach Al Chapman. “The rest of them wrestled really well down the stretch.”
Also for Pekin, Brad Beam and Michael Hadley finished sixth individually at 160 and 220 pounds, respectively.
Mediapolis grabbed titles in 10 of 14 weight classes to repeat as team champion. The Bulldogs nearly doubled runner-up Columbus’ point total with 302 points. Columbus finished with 158 points and New London was third with 106.
Pekin will be at the sectional tournament in Eddyville on Saturday.
Cale second for Cardinal
LONE TREE — A second-place finish from junior Ryan Cale steered Cardinal to a ninth-place team finish Saturday at the SEISC tournament.
The 113-pound Cale edged Pekin’s Brandon Baayen with a 4-3 decision before falling to Jack Walker of Wapello in the finals match, and Cardinal finished ahead of three other teams with a final tally of 66.
Cardinal’s Dustin Miller and Josh Ramos added a pair of third-place finishes at 170 and 182 pounds, respectively. Ramos won by fall in 3:24 against Columbus’ Javier Diaz in the third-place consolation, and Miller pinned Pekin’s Thomas Slaney in 3:41 in their consolation match.
Sixth-place finishes came from 145-pounder Patrick Lind and Tyler Albert at 152.
The Comets head to the sectional tournament in Eddyville Saturday.

LONE TREE — Seven Van Buren wrestlers placed at the SEISC tournament Saturday as the Warriors finished sixth in the team standings with 82 points.
Jesse Fuller, who claimed third place at 145 pounds, had the top finish for Van Buren. Fuller fell to Columbus’ Zac Howell in the semifinal round but bounced back with victories over Cardinal’s Patrick Lind and New London’s Brody Burns.
Van Buren’s Tyler Runyon (106), Jacob Heisel (126) and Mitch Garrels (195) also made the third-place consolation round but settled for fourth place in their respective weight classes.
