Volunteers needed to plant trees
The Fairfield Volunteer Center is recruiting volunteers to help plant trees Sunday and April 28 in Chautauqua Park and the nearby community orchard.
Volunteers can work any or all of three shifts planned for Sunday: 10 a.m. to noon; 1-3 p.m.; and 3-5 p.m.
Volunteers also can work any or both of two shifts planned April 28: 10 a.m. to noon; and 1-3 p.m.
A clean up and closing ceremony is set for 3-5 p.m. April 28.
The volunteers will be planting oaks, hickory, ash, maple and Kentucky coffee trees to replace the 50 historic landmark oak trees recently lost to oak wilt.
In addition, 24 trees will be planted in the community orchard.
The planting is a celebration of Earth Day, which is April 22, Global Youth Service Day, which is April 26-28, and National Volunteer Week, which is April 21-27.
