Volunteers to pack food for Take Away Hunger Sunday
A group of area churches is having its eighth food packing session Sunday afternoon at Word of Life Lutheran Church.
The church volunteers will now be packing food for Take Away Hunger instead of Kids Against Hunger.
The first shift will start packing at 1 p.m., with the second shift starting at 2:30 p.m.; although volunteers are welcome to work for as short or as long as they would like. The packing event should end by 4 p.m.
“The goal is to pack 30,000 meals, so we need all the volunteers that we can get,” said Don Henderson, one of the organizers from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Volunteers also are needed for about 1.5 hours Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at World of Life church to help unload the supplies, set up tables, set up the equipment and assemble boxes.
Volunteers also are needed at the end of the packing event to take down the tables and equipment.
According to Henderson, the united group of churches have packed a total of 226,572 meals during the previous seven packing events.
The churches are: Fairfield Friends Church, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Word of Life Church and First Christian Church, all in Fairfield, plus Faith United Methodist Church in Libertyville.
According to its website, Take Away Hunger is a food relief organization that unifies teams of people who package a specialized rice-based soy casserole mixture which is used locally and overseas.
It is based on a simple principle of people helping people, in this instance, even kids. Take Away Hunger not only nourishes hungry children, but the spirits of the volunteers who pack the meals.
