Vote ‘yes’ on bond for pool/gym
I am writing this letter to ask the voters of rural Jefferson County to vote yes in the upcoming Aug. 6 special bond referendum.
A yes vote would mean approving the use of a portion of the one cent local option sales tax to give one million dollars towards the outdoor pool and gym projection over 10 years. These funds would have otherwise been used towards property tax relief.
While I like the idea of lower property taxes, I feel the benefits of this project outweigh a reduction in taxes. While considered by some a luxury item unworthy of taxpayer dollars, I consider the services offered by the park and rec to be critical to the community.
Having recreational and exercise opportunities available is what people who are considering to move to or stay in the community look for. A community gymnasium is something people of all ages will be able to utilize and enjoy for years to come.
Keeping kids active and healthy in the community is a goal worthy of achieving. Achieving this goal is well within sight. I would commend the initial task force members for having a clear vision of what this community needs and keeping a reasonable budget.
With the city of Fairfield making a $3 million commitment last fall and nearly $4 million raised for the project privately, I think an overwhelming amount of support has been shown towards this project already. I would again like to encourage a yes vote from the rural voters on Aug. 6.
