Warriors split doubleheader at Cardinal

Feb 04, 2014

The Van Buren boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled Monday to Eldon to face the rival Comets.

The Warrior boys, who defeated Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont by 30 on Saturday, won 84-45.

Thomas Fitzsimmons led Van Buren with 24 points. Garrett Saunders scored 19. Caleb Durflinger led Cardinal with 22 points.

Van Buren (15-2) will play Friday at Central Lee. Cardinal (7-9) is scheduled to host Harmony tonight.

The Cardinal girls’ team defeated Van Buren 60-53. The Comets (7-9) extended Van Buren’s losing streak to six. The Warriors are now 6-11 on the season.

Cardinal jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter from which the Warriors could never recover.

Jessie McElderry led the Comets with 22 points and six rebounds. Danae Moses drained four three-pointers and scored 16 points.

“The girls got off to a quick start,” Cardinal coach Aaron Dose said. “They played hard and we had some players step up at the end of the game and make big shots. It was a great win for us as we prepare for the postseason.”

Cardinal and Van Buren will meet again to open up the postseason on Feb. 15 in Keosauqua.
