Williamsburg, lightning spoil Fairfield baseball opener
WILLIAMSBURG — In the season opener at Williamsburg Monday, the Fairfield boys’ baseball team endured a rough first game before lightning spoiled a promising nightcap.
The Trojans fell to the host Raiders 10-0 in the opener of the twinbill. The postponed nightcap ended in a 1-all tie.
Fairfield head coach Josh Allison was just happy to get the season’s first games started.
“It’s always good to get the first games under the belt. Practice and scrimmages can only tell you so much about yourself,” said Allison. “We really had some good things happen tonight, and we found some areas we need more work in as well. Fortunately, we have three days of practice coming to work on a few things and try to be better next time out.”
Williamsburg starter Payton Kauzlarich held Fairfield to three hits in the opening game shutout. Josh Dimmitt, Joe Hietpas and Justin Leonard recorded the only hits for Fairfield.
Hietpas was handed the loss after pitching three innings of two-run ball. He allowed five hits and struck out four. Austin Gridley was charged with seven earned runs and Jordan Whitney allowed one run in relief.
In the nightcap, Dimmitt scored Kooper Dahlstrom with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Mason Ellis had two base knocks and Leonard went 1-for-4.
Ryan Gaumer was in line for the win until he gave up one run in the bottom of the sixth. The senior starter pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out seven.
No completion date has been set for the Fairfield-Williamsburg second game.
Next up for the Trojans (0-1) is a JV-varsity doubleheader Friday at home vs. Ottumwa.
