WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW: Comets look to run floor, score in transitionDose enters second season as head coach with high expectations
Head Coach: Aaron Dose, 2nd year
Key Returnees: Schylar Conger (Sr.), Lexi Fullencamp (So.), Jessie McElderry (So.), Delaney Ridgeway (So.)
Outlook: Aaron Dose’s team is looking to outperform last year’s squad. Youthful they may be, but Cardinal is hoping to be sitting at or near the top of the SEISC South by the end of the season.
Speed will be the key to victory this season for the Comets.
Coming off of an 8-14 campaign that ended with a first round district loss to Eddyville-Blakesburg, Cardinal is hoping that a change in style will help push them into the upper echelon of the SEISC South.
“We kind of fell in right where people thought we would in the conference,” head coach Aaron Dose said. “We won close games but hopefully we can win more games this season.”
Dose is now in his second season and will be without Lindsay Moore, who tied the Cardinal school record for points in a season her junior year and led the team in many offensive categories as a senior.
The Comets will be a very young team. Only three seniors are on the roster. Schylar Conger will be the only senior in the starting lineup, and she played minimal minutes last year. Cardinal will be relying on its youth to make the wheels roll.
“Pretty young varsity and not a lot on varsity right now,” Dose said.
By not a lot, Dose means the numbers are down. Only 10 players are on the varsity roster and only nine dressed for their game against Albia Monday night. Dakota Durflinger missed the game because of a concussion she suffered in the preseason scrimmage against Sigourney.
What Cardinal does have is dedicated young players. Sophomore Delaney Ridgeway, who was second on the team in scoring last season, is back in the starting lineup with two fellow sophomores, Lexi Fullenkamp and Jessie McElderry. McElderry scored seven of Cardinal’s 14 points during a preseason scrimmage. Dose is hoping her scoring outbursts will continue.
“I’m sure she’ll continue to score and be very productive,” Dose said.
Junior Danae Moses rounds out the projected starting lineup for the Comets. This team will try to push the ball down the court to get easy points in transition.
“A lot of it right now for us is defense,” Dose said. “We’re focusing on playing defense and that will allow for us to get out and run and get easy layups.”
Look for seniors Anna Phillips and Shannon Selk to get playing time off the bench. Youngsters Ryley McElderry and Lindsey Davis will see playing time too, especially with such a small squad.
Cardinal will need to play defense so it can match points with conference powers Notre Dame, Central Lee and Holy Trinity. The Comets will get to play Tuesday against one of the teams they’re hoping to surpass: Central Lee.
“I think it will be a close race to be at the top of the conference,” Dose said. “We want to win in districts. The main goal is get postseason victories.”
