WIT & WISDOM
The Wit & Wisdom Club’s meeting at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Community Room of the Fairfield Public Library concluded its 108th program year.
Hosts for the evening were Will and Joanne Page of Des Moines, assisted by Dan and Emily Reneker and Don and Jean Wallace.
Club President Ray Woody presided over a business meeting, the main item of which was the election of new officers for the next year. Bob Keller was elected president, Kathy Tollenaere, vice president, Sue Long, secretary and Jerry Long, treasurer.
Following the business meeting, Program Chairman Greg Hanshaw introduced his brother-in-law Joe Hartman of Cedar Rapids, a longtime skydiver.
Hartman grew up in Fairfield, is a graduate of Fairfield High School and was a member of Parsons College’s last graduating class in 1973. He made his first jump at age 16, with his parents’ permission, at the Clingan Field on Glasgow Road. He was an active member of the Parsons Sharpchuters and participated in jumps into the football field to deliver the game ball to the referee. He continues active in the sport and as an instructor.
Hartman had a display of parachute equipment and explained how it was used. He also had film of skydiving, much of which he had taken himself.
A question-and-answer period was held at the conclusion of his presentation.
The evening ended with light refreshments and conversation.
