Withrow earns gold in dead lift
IOWA CITY — Ronnie Withrow of Fairfield claimed gold in the dead lift competition at the 2013 Special Olympics Mid Winter Tournament Saturday in Iowa City. Withrow lifted 340 pounds to earn a first-place medal.
Withrow, who is coached by Brian Simmons, also placed third in the bench press event with a top lift of 225 pounds.
Fairfield High School student Ross Robinson earned a second-place medal in the tournament’s basketball skills competition.Robinson is coached by Rhonda Robinson.
Three Fairfield Middle School students, who are coached by Billy Mathis, also finished in the top four of their respective basketball skills contests. Nathan Mathis and Andrew Peiffer both claimed bronze medals, and Wesley Polson earned a fourth-place yellow ribbon.
The weekend tournament kicked off with a banquet and dance Friday evening featuring former University of Iowa athlete Tim Dwight as guest speaker and a special appearance by Iowa mascot Herky the Hawk. All events — including gymnastics, cheer and dance, power lifting and basketball skills — took place Saturday.
