Historic McElhinny House has been a beehive of activity the past month, as the Fairfield Women’s Club prepares for various activities taking place, including the Christmas at the McElhinny House.

Several organizations and individuals have rented the grand old house for celebrations, which keeps many of the women volunteering to prepare food or to be present to assist with serving. In addition to those responsibilities, the women have been gearing up for their annual Christmas event to take place 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 14.

The Christmas event will include a tea table loaded with homemade goodies and a choice of beverages, as well as a table of baked goods, frozen ham balls and chicken casseroles, all for sale to help ease the load of cooking during the holiday season.

As well as the above-mentioned, which have become standards for the event, the group has put together several “Gifts in a Jar,” which will be for sale, also. These include: potato soup, Rainbow Bean Soup, turkey noodle soup, Treasure Chest Cookies, double-chocolate brownies, Cowboy Cookies, ground beef stroganoff, Turkey Bowtie Skillet and a cocoa mix.

Some of the cocoa mixes will be packaged in a Christmas mug and others in small gift-sized jars. The others are in decorated quarts and pints and include instructions for preparation. Most require few additions and are quite delicious, making a handy inexpensive gift for that hard-to-buy-for person. Quarts are $10 and pints are $5, and are so lovely they don’t even need to be wrapped.

A dated, limited edition porcelain Christmas tree ornament featuring the exterior of the McElhinny House decorated for Christmas also is for sale at $15. Orders can be placed early to ensure availability.

It is planned to continue offering ornaments in future years, with a new featured image, if there is enough interest.

The house is lovely inside and out with festive décor and tables of collections.
