Wright leads Pekin girls at Clear Creek Classic
TIFFIN — Propelled by freshman Gwynne Wright and the distance crew, the Pekin girls’ track team cruised to a meet title in the Class B field of the Clear Creek Classic in Tiffin Friday.
Wright won the 1500, 3000 and was on the winning distance medley relay as Pekin scored 150 points, topping a field of seven other squads. West Branch finished runner-up with 111 points and West Liberty was third with 86.
Wright opened her big day winning the 3000-meter run by 14 seconds, crossing the line in 10:39. The freshman also cruised to a 5:05 finish in the 1500, and she anchored the distance medley team of Mallory Reed, Beth Atwood and Whitney Horras to the finish line in 4:31.91.
Pekin added its fourth and final victory in the 4x800, where Whitney Horras, Maleaha Earnest, Sloan Reighard and Samantha Wright posted a winning time of 10:46.
Pekin also had several second-place finishes, including Nikole Arendt in the 100 (14.33), Earnest in the 400 (1:00.90) and Samantha Wright in the 400-meter hurdles (1:15.46).
Pekin also ran at the Coe Co-Ed in Cedar Rapids Monday. They host their first and only meet, the Pantherette Relays, on Thursday.
