Fairfield Farmers Market returns to Howard Park

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | May 03, 2018

The Fairfield Farmers Market returns to the great outdoors Saturday after a long winter.

Just as in years past, the market will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Howard Park. Wednesday hours will be 3-6 p.m., also at Howard Park. The market will be outdoors now through the end of October, when it returns to the Fairfield Senior Citizen Center.

Cary Spray, farmers market board president, said the board is looking for volunteers to handle either advertising or entertainment. Since those positions are vacant, the board has no musicians or other performers scheduled so far.

Early season markets tend to feature greens such as spinach, kale, arugula, lettuce, mustard, bok choy and more. Spray said there is always plenty of perennial plants, crafts, jellies, jams and freshly prepared foods.

“Our market prides itself on selling locally produced goods,” Spray said. “You have to make it, bake it or create it yourself. We don’t accept vendors who want to set up a flea market.”

Spray also mentioned that vendors must be local, from southeast Iowa.

Those who wish to volunteer on the board or learn more about the market can email Spray at naturesway@natel.net. Vendors who wish to sell at the market can visit the organization’s website at www.fairfieldfarmersmarket.com for a waiver and indemnity form, and a list of market rules and guidelines.

The farmers’ market has a program whereby vendors qualify for a “certified locally produced” designation. Once inspected, the vendor can hang a certificate at their stall.
