Thirty-five Fairfield Middle School band students were accepted for the 18th annual Mount Pleasant honor band April 6.

This year’s nomination numbers were more restricted, and FMS band instructor Mary Andersen was unable to send as many students as she would have liked. She explained the FMS band program has many talented students, but the honor band can only accept a specific number of students to keep the band balanced and fit in the rehearsal spaces used.

Nineteen sixth-grade studentswere selected to represent Fairfield in the 120-piece band comprised of sixth-grade band students from 12 different schools in southeast Iowa. One of the FMS students was unable to attend the event.

Sixteen students from the FMS seventh- and eighth-grade band program were accepted for the 140-piece combined seventh- and eighth-grade honor band. Three were unable to attend the event.

Andersen said FMS students have a reputation for being well prepared for the event, and many were sitting at the top of their sections.

Guest conductors for the event were Tara Daurer of Pleasant Valley schools for the sixth-grade band and Gerry Kreitzer of Mount Mercy University for the seventh- and eighth-grade band.
