Forty years ago this summer saw one of the worst fires in Fairfield’s history. The Eclipse BIG-E Lumber Company at North Fourth Street and West Lowe Avenue burned down. The arson fire occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. the night of Sunday, June 18, 1978. Photographer Mort Gaines captured this image of the lumberyard burning. Gaines said he remembered that the fire was so hot that it peeled paint off a fire truck at the scene, and destroyed 900 pairs of phone and electric lines.
