New landfill operator saves SEMCO money

By LACEY JACOBS, Ledger staff writer | Apr 21, 2010

The Southeast Iowa Multi-County Solid Waste Agency anticipates saving $250,000 on landfill operations during the next five years.

SEMCO accepted a $26,250 per month bid for daily operations from Winn J Construction Co. of Ollie during a meeting Wednesday. The company will take over operations from Rinehart Construction Co. of Des Moines Oct. 1.

Rinehart Construction and Winn Construction were the only two companies to submit bids for the contract, although seven companies requested specifications, according to Fairfield City Councilman Ron Adam, who represents the city on SEMCO’s six-member board.

Rinehart Construction has operated the three-county landfill for the last 25 years. Rinehart submitted a $30,576 per month bid for the contract.

Right now, Rinehart is contracted at $27,500 per month.

SEMCO Manager Bill Sloop, the only landfill employee directly hired by SEMCO, said the transition Oct. 1 should be seamless.
