‘Amazing Grace’ makes one of two Iowa stops in Fairfield

Mar 01, 2018

“Amazing Grace,” the new Broadway original musical based on the awe-inspiring true story behind the world’s most beloved song comes to the Sondheim center on its inaugural 27-state national tour at 7:30 p.m. March 9.

A captivating tale of romance, rebellion and redemption, this radiant production follows one man whose incredible journey ignited a historic wave of change. Brimming with emotion and adventure, “Amazing Grace” is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.

John Newton, a willful and musically talented young Englishmen, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father, a slave trader, or embracing the more compassionate view of his childhood sweetheart.

“We are thrilled to have Fairfield’s Sondheim theater selected for a stop on the national tour, only one of two Iowa dates,” said Rustin Lippincott, director of the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center and its Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts. “This Christian-themed musical is centered round the peculiar story of Newton’s life, which traces the gradual moral awakening that led to his conversion from a trafficker in human flesh to a deeply religious writer of hymns. The show will be the feel-good performance of the center’s decade long history.”

Accompanied by his slave, Thomas, John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.

“Amazing Grace” features music and lyrics by Christopher Smith, who was a police officer and youth outreach and education director in Pennsylvania. It took him seven years, and a serious amount of self-teaching, to get his show to Broadway.

“Smith is the only person to conceive, write and compose a show to get to Broadway on his first try,” said Lippincott. “The national tour of ‘Amazing Grace’ features a cast made up of performers who had lead roles in national tours of ‘Oklahoma!,’ ‘Legally Blond,’ ‘Evita,’ ‘Blue Man Group,’ ‘South Pacific,’ ‘Dreamgirls,’ ‘Moses,’ ‘Big Fish’ and ‘Parade.’”

Tickets for “Amazing Grace” are $49 for Zone 1, $44 for Zone 2, and $39 for Zone 3 and $24 for Zone 4 and $10 for youth tickets.

Tickets and information are available at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center ticket office, 472-2787 or www.FairfieldACC.com.
