American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Days May 18-19

May 10, 2018

The American Legion Auxiliary of the Allen-Jewett Post No. 47 will hold its 2018 Poppy Days May 18 and 19 in Fairfield.

The auxiliary will distribute poppies and accept donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at First National Bank, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. both May 18 and May 19 at Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store and Walmart.

Poppies bloomed abundantly in the spring of 1919 during World War I in the battlefields of France where so many had fallen in battle. The replica of that poppy has been considered the Memorial Flower of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1921. Last year was the first year that a National Poppy Day was declared; this year, May 25 has been declared National Poppy Day.

In Iowa, the red crepe paper poppies are made by veterans who are disabled and in hospitals, and the auxiliaries that distribute poppies in their communities pay the individual who makes them. Poppies are distributed each year by members of American Legion Auxiliary and other volunteers. The public is given an opportunity to help veterans by donating, and pay tribute to all veterans who are deceased, have served or are currently serving, by wearing the poppy during Poppy Days. One hundred percent of the profits from the freewill offering collected during Poppy Days is pledged to the welfare relief for servicemen and servicewomen and their families.

On Memorial Day, people in the community are also asked to take a moment to honor the services of men and women who have gone to fight for our great nation, and tragically did not return home.
