Applications due for trip to Sweden

May 05, 2017

Fairfield Rotary is taking applications for its Swedish-American Cultural Exchange.

This year, the Rotary club will send two young Americans, who must be 18 by July 21, to Sweden from around July 20-29.

The scholarship provides $1,000 each toward travel expenses, and the travelors stay with families in their homes the whole time to experience the culture, so some food is covered. The exchange participants are responsible for any additional travel expenses, insurance, some food costs, and whatever shopping they do. Some people arrange travel excursions in Europe after the Swedish week.

Everyone who has gone on this trip has had a wonderful experience, said Beth Alonso of the Rotary.

“We are building friendships with our sister community in Kisa, Sweden,” she continued. “We have shared history: back in the 1800s many Swedes emigrated from that part of Sweden to this part of Iowa, and in fact, were the founders of Swedesberg, which is just a half hour from here. This mini Rotary Exchange Program program was created to commemorate that history.”

Requirements to apply: be 18-30 years of age, an American citizen from Fairfield or the surrounding area; be a positive, honest, and kind-hearted person who would represent the community well; be confident to travel independently; having Swedish heritage is a plus, but is not required.

Applications are due May 15.
