Letter of thanks

Appreciate businesses, individuals who contributed to steer show

By Jefferson County Cattlemen board members | Sep 21, 2017

To the editor:

Jefferson County Cattlemen extends a big thank you to all businesses and individuals who contributed to the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show. The money raised benefited the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City in the state of Iowa.

All houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children. The show is hosted by Gov. Kim Reynolds and sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

This year was the 35th annual event. This legendary event is a mainstay of the Iowa State Fair.

The show and auction exemplifies what Iowa is all about – young people who have cared for animals and people helping people. This year’s auction was the highest selling mark of $274,000 and breaking the cumulative $3 million mark.

Six area county cattlemen’s associations – Jefferson, Henry, Lee, Louisa, Des Moines and Van Buren – are identified as District 20, sponsored one of the 25 steers. All steers are raised by Iowa youth and shown by an Iowa celebrity.

Our local steer was raised by Lane Walton of Lee County and shown by Chip Flory, who is the market rally host from Pro Farmer.

District 20 Cattlemen were able to purchase the steer for $16,500. The money came from contributors within the District. All of these proceeds were then donated to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa.

Without the support of the owners and their families, sponsors, celebrity showmen, and women, and buyers this event would not be possible.

Jefferson County Cattlemen thank each and every contributor for being a part of the 35th Annual Governor’s Charity Steer show.
