Arc of Jefferson and Nearby Counties

The Arc of Jefferson and Nearby Counties held its annual meeting June 15 at Fairfield Public Library, with 23 present, including officers.

Taylor Peiffer, from Pekin High School, was special guest. She was the recipient of the Susan Presley Scholarship and will be attending Indian Hills Community College this fall to study early childhood.

Phyllis Freeman gave a program on how she had taken her mother and aunt with her to Camp Courageous so they could share in the experience of volunteering there. Camp Courageous, in Monticello, is a therapeutic camp for Iowa-area people of all ages with various disabilities.

Refreshments were provided by Jack and Pat Whitten, Codie Amason, Ronnie Withrow and Kathy Henry.

The following members were nominated and approved: Lynn Kane, president; Codie Amason, vice president; Kerri Erue, secretary; Barb Withrow, treasurer; Brian Simmons, IPP.

Four new members were voted on and approved for board of directors: Gayle Hervey, Lori Lahvic, Mark Mayer and Janel Orgovanyi.

Kane thanked the outgoing board members for their service: Kathy Henry, secretary, and Jack Whitten, Wendy Hendricks.

Kerri Erue reported 10 athletes attended the State Special Olympics May 25 and 26. They participated in the 250 bike race, softball throw, 50 meter and 100 meter.

The Tootsie Roll drive, in conjunction with Knights of Columbus, was Aug. 4-5.

A disc golf basket, with six discs, was ordered for the residents at Jackson Point. This will give them an activity to do without leaving the site.

The next meeting will be Sept. 28 at the Tenco building in Fairfield. All are invited.

For information, call Kane at 472-5441 in the evenings.
