Area blood drives scheduled

Apr 19, 2013

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center mobile unit drew 12 pints of blood April 3 at the Keosauqua Senior Center in Van Buren County.

The blood center will be holding two area blood drives, from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Birmingham Lions Club Building and from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 26 at the Jefferson County Health Center.

For appointments to the Birmingham Lions Club drive, call Harry Anderson at 319-498-4201.

The Jefferson County Health Center drive will be held in the conference room. For appointments, call 800-452-1097

To be eligible to donate Thursday, donors must have donated last on or before Feb. 28, and for April 26, donors must have donated last on or before March 1.

Donors must be at least 16 years old, be in good health, and weigh at least 110 pounds. A blood donor card or other form of photo identification is required to donate. A 16-year-old must present a signed parental consent form each time he or she donates until reaching 17 years of age.

According to blood center officials, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure. Donating only takes about an hour, and one pint of blood, the typical donation from one person, can save up to three lives.

Consent forms and more information about blood donation are available at www.bloodcenter.org.
