A.J. Vandekamp of Albia missed last year’s JCF demo derby, but two years ago he and his cousin took first and second.

This year he returned to try to get back on top and ended up finishing sixth in the full-size weld class with Tyler Clouse of Albia collecting the crown.

Andy Coe won the full-size stock class and Jake VanPolen of Oskaloosa won the compact weld class.

Overall more than three dozen vehicles entered the various classes Vandekamp suggests that many of them were likely Fords.

“We mainly use 80s Fords because they are cheap and they’re everywhere and with the rules set up the way they are, they do pretty well,” explained Vandekamp who said he’s a car guy who is continuing his family’s legacy.

“They did it before me and now I’m out here trying to put on a show. That’s all it is for me,” admitted A.J. who said there used to be strategy involved but suggested that now it’s all about putting it to the floor.

“You just go for it,” said Vandekamp. “We put a lot of time and money into these cars to impress these people while having a good time doing it and I hope they come out and see us.”
