Art walk thanks artists, community

By Dania De Bortoli | Dec 20, 2012

To the editor:

Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk is grateful to everyone who participated in Art Walk’s December Holiday Gingerbread Extravaganza, where the holiday spirit was celebrated with friends, family and the smell of gingerbread. Despite the initial wind and rain, by the later part of the evening the weather cooperated and there was a large turnout in the square. The children’s choirs were delightful and the horse drawn carriage rides were a charming way to enjoy the holiday lights of our town.

A huge thank you goes to our December Event Sponsor Hy-Vee and our annual partner for this event, the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce, who has been partnering with Art Walk for nine years to bring you this fun and charming Art Walk event. Nancy Morrissey and Lori Knows at the Chamber are fabulous to work with and their superb organizational abilities and warmth just made the event as fun to create as it was to experience!

A huge thank you goes to the wonderful gingerbread artists who entered their delightful creations in our annual contest open to the public. You can view all the houses around the Fairfield town square through the month of December: Irene Murphy with “Hobbit Holiday” at Century 21 Hayes-Heartland; Rebecca Johnson with “Library of Congress” at Fairfield Nutrition; Ana Victoria with “A House for Mother” at Blue Fish Clothing; Brenda Alderman with “Peppermint Twist” at Henderson’s Custom Framing and Gallery; Tace James with “Fibonacci Cottage” at ILA; Fawn Alderman with “Santa’s Candy Cabin” at Flair; Astrid Hoose with “The Bedroom” at Revelations Cafe and Book Store; Ashlee Jones with “Candy Land” at Cell Tech/Verizon; Isaac Jones with “Log Cabin” at Johnny’s Place; Taylor Hall with “Winter House” at Health & Wholeness; Genevieve Messer with “School House Rocks” at Flair; The Group of Paloma, Marisa and Braun with “We Love Snow” at Crest Jewel; Girl Scout Troup 9297 with “Special Delivery for Santa’s Workshop” at Finnywick’s; The Group of Todt, Hays, Seares and Seleck with “Christmas Elves Village” at Fairfield Nutrition; The Todt Family with “Fairy Friend Mansion” at Health & Wholeness; Bennett and Miller with “Hippy Van” at Flirt; Vorhies and Ives with “Childhood Memories” at Henderson’s Custom Framing and Gallery; Joy Salmon with “Iowa Heritage Gingerbread Windmill” at Chocolate Café; Rae Ann McClaran with “Santa’s Workshop” at Kim’s Kottage; Spilman and Lotz with “Triangle Flat Roof House” at Finishing Touch; and Oropeza and Sanchez with “Gingerbread School” at Johnny’s Place.

This year we were very fortunate to have the support and help from the employees of Hy-Vee and Hawthorne Direct, who spent over 100 hours working on our annual gingerbread house fundraiser. The ladies at the Hy-Vee Bakery made 30 gingerbread houses. Art Walk has a lot of gratitude for Brenda, Norma, Vienna, Stephanie and Stacy for putting in hours to perfect the recipe and bake gingerbread houses.

Once the pieces for the houses were baked, they were then delivered to Hawthorne Direct where they were constructed and then decorated by volunteers. Besides Holly Moore, Beth Alonzo and Suzan Kessel, most of the volunteers were Hawthorne employees who would pass by the break room and smell the yummy scent of gingerbread in the air and eye the huge amount of candy that was purchased for decoration. For some employees, lunch breaks and time after work were spent decorating houses. It was a great way to get into the holiday spirit. Some new and creative themes came from this setup and we hope to do it again next year. A warm thank you goes to Nancy Annis, Rob Gothshall, Novena Cole, Sheila Peck, Sheryl Bergren, Kay Ford, Sheryl Bergren, Amanda Potts, Sherri Mineart, Sarah Ledger, Karla Crawford-Kerr and Lauren Schaeffer.

We also want to share our gratitude to all the volunteers and supporters who came to help and support Art Walk last Friday. Gratitude is also extended to Thom Banks, Rick Peck, Jim Freese, Sophia Mineart, Josh Mineart, Brittany Hoskins, Brandon Hoskins, Holly Jeffrey, Dennis Lopp, Don Henderson, Girl Scout Troup 9297 and Holland Webb, who helped make this event a success.

Final thanks go out to all of the businesses that are sponsoring and supporting Art Walk. We encourage local companies and individuals to keep supporting Art Walk because when you support Art Walk you are supporting the entire community.
