Author visiting Richland Library

Jun 19, 2018

RICHLAND -- Author Sharon Hackert Traner will be at the Richland Library at 9 a.m. Saturday to meet with interested readers to discuss her novel, “A Striving After Wind.”

Traner has drawn upon her experiences of growing up on a farm in the Richland area to write a story about a large family from New York City who comes to live on a farm in a small town in Iowa. The novel takes place from 1970 to 1973 against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Traner feels it’s important for later generations to understand the impact those times had on families across the country as they grappled with the chaos and uncertainty of those changing times.

Traner graduated from Pekin High School in 1968 and then attended nurses’ training at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing. She now lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with her husband, Mark. Retired, her life revolves around her own large family and she enjoys having the time for more writing. She has stated, “For me, writing is like breathing -- you just have to do it every day.”

Traner will give a short presentation regarding the novel with a question-and-answer session to follow. She said she is very excited to have this opportunity to interact with her “hometown folks” and talk about a project that is very near and dear to her heart. She hopes she has represented the farming communities of small town America well in her writing effort.
