FORT MADISON — One start was all Robert Barker needed to record his first ever no-hitter, and Van Buren cruised to a 15-2 victory over Holy Trinity in Fort Madison Tuesday.

Making the first start in his career, the freshman Barker tossed all six innings to earn the no-no. Barker allowed two earned runs on five walks, striking out 13 of the possible 18 outs.

Van Buren provided more than enough offense to back up Barker. The Warriors trailed 2-1 after the first inning, but a four-run second inning put them back in the driver’s seat. The visitors led 9-2 after five and scored six more runs in the sixth.

Garrett Saunders led the Warrior offense with three hits in four plate appearances, knocking in three runs on a pair of doubles. The sophomore also scored twice.

Barker helped out his own cause with two runs batted in, and Tyson Sprouse and Tanner Smith each scored three runs. Thomas Fitzsimmons smacked a double, and Austin Bartholomew, Brandon Plecker and Will Mertens finished with one single apiece.

Van Buren (3-2, 3-0 SEISC South) looks to remain undefeated in conference play when it hosts New London Friday.
