Betty Hootman -- 1932-2017

Betty Jean Hootman, 85, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Hook Cemetery near Brighton.

A memorial fund has been established for Paws & More Animal Shelter.

Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, is assisting with arrangements.

Mrs. Hootman was born Jan. 19, 1932, in Brighton to Harold and Vera Hesseltine DeWolf. She married Charles Hootman Sept. 9, 1950, in Fairfield. He preceded her in death.

She graduated from Brighton High School.

She worked in housekeeping at United Presbyterian Home in Washington, and as a para educater at the Washington Middle School for five years.

During Mr. Hootman’s career in the U.S. Air Force, she traveled around the world, seeing new places and meeting new people.

Mrs. Hootman enjoyed dogs and loved to feed the dogs at McCreedy Home.

Survivors include: sons Michael (Anucha Onongard) Hootman of Seattle, Washington, and Jeff (Shelley) Hootman of Iowa City; brothers Dean DeWolf and Gary DeWolf, both of Washington; sisters Linda Glandon of Oskaloosa and Connie Humston of Washington, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: her parents; sister Joan DeWolf; and brother Donald DeWolf.
