Bike Van Buren offers several routes, activities

Aug 11, 2017

KEOSAUQUA — Bike Van Buren XXXI, set for Aug. 19-20, will take bicyclists through some of the most beautiful countryside in Iowa, including a portion of the Historic Hills Scenic Byway and several historic villages.

Several different routes, with mileage between 35 and 56, are planned to accommodate everyone’s experience level. Each route begins and ends in Keosauqua, but the exact paths will not be revealed until registration. At registration, a participant will receive maps with routes and mileage, hospitality stops, restrooms and lunch options.

Registration and check-in will be 7-8:30 a.m. Aug. 19 and 7:30-8 a.m. Aug. 20 under the tent in Keosauqua City Park. Anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Technical support will be provided by Villages of Van Buren staff and volunteers, and a phone number for assistance will be printed on the map.

Complimentary refreshments will be available at every stop.

Riders also can try to collect the best poker hand by drawing playing cards at designated hospitality stops. Two riders who have the best poker hand each day will win $100. Turn in cards from 4-6 p.m. in City Park.

Riders also can order commemorative T-shirts when registering.

Helmets are strongly encouraged, but not required.

The Keosauqua Lions Club will serve breakfast both mornings in the park. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and fresh fruit for $6.

The Lions also will serve dinner from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 19 in the park. A plate of barbecued Iowa pork chops, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw and drinks will be $8. Tarnished Brass will perform from 5-6 p.m., and root beer floats will be sold from 5-7 p.m. for $1.50, with proceeds benefiting the Bonaparte Community Improvement Assocation.

The Lions Club, First Iowa State Bank and Bickles Cycling & Fitness will have its annual fund-raising bike raffle again. Tickets can be bought during breakfast and before dinner Aug. 19 in City Park. The winner will be drawn during dinner that evening.
