Birmingham issues boil order

Apr 24, 2018

BIRMINGHAM – The city of Birmingham is asking its residents to boil water while the water distribution system is being repaired.

A flyer from the city stated that repairs were to begin Monday, April 23. Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, the city recommends boiling the water before drinking or cooking with it.

“Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water,” the flyer stated.

The flyer went on to say that water should be boiled starting Monday and for 72 hours after that. Water should be boiled if it will be used for other activities such as making ice or brushing teeth, too. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

After it is repaired, the water distribution system will be repressurized, and bacteria samples will be collected. Birmingham Water Supply is working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to resolve the situation.

For more information, contact the city at 319-498-4296, or the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
