Blue Ribbon Blues Fest features blues, barbecue at fairgrounds

Jul 25, 2014

Southeast Iowa Blues Society, along with the Jefferson County Fair Board, present the Blue Ribbon Blues Fest, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds as part of a blues music-themed weekend in Fairfield.

Blue Ribbon Blues Fest will take place after the award-winning Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk Blues and Barbeque event the evening of Aug. 1, carrying the blues theme right through the weekend.

Blue Ribbon Blues Fest is the inaugural outdoor blues festival hosted by the Blues Society and will feature four acts in what organizers say is going to be a great night of music, food and drink.

Headlining the Blue Ribbon Blues Fest is The Ghost Town Blues Band, which is quickly becoming “the next big thing in the blues world.”

Ghost Town Blues has won award after award including the prestigious Memphis Blues Society Challenge, and was runner-up at this year’s International Blues Challenge.

Other performers at the Blue Ribbon Blues Fest include The Soul Searchers, The Quay Thomas Trio and Tony Blew.

The Soul Searchers, a hard-swinging blues band from Des Moines, plays more than 100 dates a year throughout Iowa and neighboring towns like Omaha and Minneapolis. The band has won the Iowa Blues Challenge, has appeared at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival and has been featured on Iowa Public Television.

The Quay Thomas Trio, formed at the famed Berklee College of Music, features Elliott and Alexandre Jannuzzi along with Quay Thomas.

The Quay Thomas Trio is currently performing in venues from the east coast to Colorado and returns to Fairfield where Thomas’s love for the blues started.

Tony Blew has been a staple of the Ottumwa music scene for decades and brings his love of the blues to Fairfield to add to the lineup.

Along with the music, Blue Ribbon Blues Fest also will feature a beverage garden and local food vendors.

Tickets for Blue Ribbon Blues Fest are $15 in advance and $18 the day of show. Tickets are available at the Classic 96 Studios in Fairfield, The Guitar Farm in New London, Morgan’s Bar in Ottumwa and by calling 919-7477.
