Bowman joining Mueller at state swim, dive meet

Oct 29, 2012

IOWA CITY — Fairfield’s Baylee Bowman added on to her string of state swim meet appearances, qualifying in the 100-freestyle at the regional meet in Iowa City Saturday.

Bowman, a junior, will be making her third straight trip to the state meet thanks to a third-place finish in the 100 (55.98). Her swim was a second off winner Lilian Zhu of Iowa City West (54.73) and was a tenth of a second below the tentative state cutoff time.

Bowman will represent the Trojans alongside freshman diver Katherine Mueller at the state meet scheduled Friday-Saturday in Marshalltown.

Earlier last week, Mueller qualified with a fourth-place finish in the regional 11-dive. Mueller, who advanced with a score of 337.10, has already notched her name into Trojan lore with school record-setting dives in both the 11-dive event (348.45) and 6-dive (213.00).

The qualifying performances of Bowman and Mueller, as well as a pair of medal-grabbing swims by junior Jade Greiner, helped Fairfield to an eighth-place finish out of 10 teams in a loaded field at the Mercer Aquatic Center in Iowa City. Iowa City West claimed the regional title with 508 points, Linn-Mar was runner-up with 415 and Cedar Rapids Washington finished third with 357 points. The Trojan’s 74 points put them ahead of both Williamsburg (59) and Tipton (45).

Bowman also made the podium in the 100-backstroke with a fourth-place finish (1:02.95), narrowly missing the state-qualifying mark of 1:02.57. Greiner earned fourth place in the 100-butterfly (1:04.98) and was first in her heat, sixth overall in the 100-breaststroke (1:13.28).

Although only two Trojan swimmers reached the podium Saturday, every one of them shaved time in their events.

“Fairfield’s swimmers did remarkably well in this meet. Not only did they lower times, some were shattered,” first-year head coach Lisa Greenig said. “That is amazing for this time of the year. I have come to realize how one second seems so small in time, however in swimming it is huge.”
