Brighton couple injured in accident

Sep 16, 2013

STOCKPORT – Two Brighton residents were airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Saturday after being thrown from the motorcycle they were riding.

Joshua Pohren, 36, the driver of the motorcycle, and Melissa Karr, 33, a passenger, are being treated for injuries they suffered during an incident at 11:48 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Highway 16 and W30, about 3 miles south of Stockport.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, Pohren and Karr were eastbound on Highway 16 at the time. Pohren lost control of the motorcycle while attempting to avoid striking a vehicle which was also eastbound on Highway 16 and turning north onto W30. Both Pohren and Karr were thrown from the motorcycle and came to rest on the south side of Highway 16.

No charges have been filed relating to the incident.

Tierney Ftwi, a long-time neighbor of Pohren, has created a prayer chain on Facebook and a “go-fund-me” website that is accepting donations for the family.

“I had this overpowering feeling to do something,” Ftwi said this morning. “[Pohren] had a massive head injury, but I knew prayer is powerful.”

Ftwi started the Facebook page dedicated to Pohren and Karr Saturday night and within 24 hours, 800 people had signed up for the prayer chain.

On the Facebook page, Ftwi wrote, “I believe in the power of prayers and Josh needs us. Even if you don’t know him, pray for him. His girlfriend Melissa was on the back with him. She was airlifted to the university and is in [the Intensive Care Unit]. Melissa is in stable condition but in pain. Pray for her as well that she finds comfort as she heals from her injuries.”

The couple has a baby girl, Ella. Ftwi said the family needs baby supplies such as diapers, wipes and food.

Those interested in contributing to the family may do so at the “go-fund-me” account at www.gofundme.com/3ubhwo. Ftwi hopes to raise $5,000 for the families, and as of press time today, $3,010 has been raised.

Those interested in joining the prayer chain can search for “Prayer Chain for Josh Pohren” on Facebook or go to www.facebook.com/events/574458842591346/.
