Sterling Spees brushes his brother’s horse Goldie before the horse show this morning at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, marking the start of the Greater Jefferson County Fair. This will be Sterling’s first year of riding horses and showing livestock at the fair. Sterling is 10 years old, and that is the county fair’s minimum age for showing animals. He was preparing to compete in several horse show events such as walk-trot, halter, showmanship, horsemanship, Western pleasure and ranch horse pleasure. The horse he’s brushing belongs to his brother, Stetson, for whom he was doing a favor. Stetson is a veteran of the fair, and won grand champion in halter horse two years in a row at the Iowa State Fair. Last year, he was reserve champion in that category at the state fair. In addition to riding horses, the Sterling and Stetson show cattle at the fair.
