Building burns in downtown Ottumwa

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Jan 09, 2018

OTTUMWA – The Bridal Cottage in Ottumwa was destroyed by fire Saturday night.

The Ottumwa Fire Department received a call at 5:07 p.m. that day, and arrived just a minute later to the building, located in the 200 block of East Second Street in the city’s downtown.

Ottumwa fire chief Tony Miller told The Ledger that the fire crew noticed heavy smoke coming out of the building’s east side upon arrival.

“A couple of our guys entered the structure and ran into some problems,” he said. “They saw pretty major fire damage, and backed out.”

The fire raged so hot that the building’s roof collapsed. The fire department sprayed water onto the building from an aerial truck, and from the roof of the adjoining building to the west.

No one was injured from the fire, though Miller said a firefighter hurt his elbow after slipping on the ice. Firefighters were on scene until about 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Miller said the shop was open that day and had just closed at 5 p.m., minutes before the fire was reported. He does not know the cause of the fire, but said that would be investigated today.

Two neighboring buildings were damaged. A photography shop not adjoining the building and east of it suffered broken windows and minor smoke damage. The adjoining business to the west reported water in its basement that had seeped in through a crack in its foundation.
