A car fire Monday afternoon briefly halted traffic on Highway 34.

Around 2:37 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of the vehicle fire.

Bradley Heaberlin of Columbia, told deputies that while he was driving, his vehicle lost power and he heard a loud noise.

The vehicle caught fire and burned along the shoulder of Highway 34 near Varnishtree Avenue, causing a brief traffic shutdown in the westbound lanes.

Lockridge Fire Department crews extinguished the blaze.

In addition to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Lockridge Fire Department, Midwest Ambulance and the Iowa Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene. No one was injured.
