The Cardinal 2013-14 archery season got off to quite a start Saturday at Eddyville-Blakesburg High School.

The competition was the first archery tournament of the season. More than 230 individuals took aim at earning trophies in four separate divisions.

The first division was the Elementary Division, and the Cardinal Elementary Comets nabbed the first place trophy with a team score of 2180. The Cardinal Middle School Comets team would shoot a score of 3226 to take home the first place trophy. The Comets were followed in the standings by Washington Middle School, which earned a team score of 2968 for the second spot, and host team Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, which took home third place and a score of 2787.

Savannah Collett shot a 272 for the first place prize in the girls’ Middle School Division and helped lead the middle school to its victory.

Four teams competed in the High School Division. Cardinal would take home first place in this division as well, scoring a 2962 on the day. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Washington and North Mahaska received the next three spots.

Cardinal’s Justin Conger, who scored a 280, won the boys’ high school individual shoot. His teammate, Brennon Elder, scored a 279 and came in second place. Fellow Cardinal Comets Nicholas Conrad, Bradley Conrad and Josh Stiles all placed in the top 10.

Makenzie LaRue of North Mahaska took home first place in the girls’ high school individual shoot, but second place through the 10 spot all went to Cardinal. The nine Comets that scored in the top 10 are, in order, Madison Durflinger, Shelby Smith, Savannah Collett, Courtney Kreft, Shannon Selk, Cheyenne Phillips, Ashley Collett, Alissabeth Sloan and Elizabeth Denniston. Durflinger finished just three points out of first place.

The next shoot for Cardinal will be Jan. 4 in Mount Vernon.
