Cardinal Comets grab first win; Pekin and Van Buren advance with wins

By Justin Webster | Feb 13, 2018

The three seniors and six sophomores that make up the Cardinal boys’ basketball team lost 45-32 Monday night in New Sharon as the road team against North Mahaska in the play-in game of the IHSAA Class 1A District No. 10 playoff bracket. This ends the Comets season at 1-20 and the 5-16 Warhawks will now travel to Lynnville-Sully Thursday for the district quarterfinals.

Friday Feb. 9 the Comets did get their first win of the season by defeating winless Columbus Junction in the SEISC boys’ shootout which pits teams from the opposite side of the conference who finished in the same place in their correlating divisions against each other.

The victory came in dramatic fashion as Columbus Junction jumped out to a 9-6 lead after the first quarter and extended their lead to five at the half by outscoring the Comets 17-15 in the second. Cardinal continued to struggle through the third period, scoring just 12 points to the Wildcats 23, allowing their final non-playoff opponent to stretch the difference to 16 entering the fourth frame of the box score.

Something came alive in the Comets as the outscored Columbus Junction 22-6 in the final eight minutes, and forcing overtime before sprinting to a 14-8 extra time advantage to win 69-63 and claim their lone win of the season.

Van Buren won their shootout game as well, defeating Winfield-Mt. Union 92-62 in Keosauqua Friday. The Warriors jumped out to a 22-7 lead after eight minutes and had the Wolves doubled-up 38-19 by the break. In the third period, they continued to pull away, outpacing their visitors 27-22 to take a 65-41 advantage into the final quarter. For good measure, Fred Parsons had his team score another 27 points against a 3-17 team, while holding them to just 21, to increase the Warriors lead once again to 30 in the 92-62 final. The victory gave Van Buren their 10th win of the season in 20 games.

Monday, the Warriors defeated Mediapolis 49-40 at Central Lee in Donnellson in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A district No. 10 playoff bracket. Van Buren is now 11-10 and will travel to face 20-1 Wapello Thursday at 7 p.m. in the district semifinal with the winner facing the victor between Central Lee and West Burlington in the district 10 final Feb. 20 in Burlington.

Pekin also played a Class 2A quarterfinal game Monday night, defeating Mid-Prairie 64-48 in the district No. 11 playoff bracket.

The Panthers jumped out to an 18-9 lead and never looked back, holding a 32-25 edge at the half before extending their advantage to 51-36 entering the fourth quarter. Pekin continued their dominance, outscoring their visitors 13-12 in the final eight minutes to claim victory by 16 points.

Next up for the Panthers is a roadtrip to 18-3 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont who received zero votes in the top 10 poll thanks to a tough Class 2A bracket that has 20-1 Wapello No. 11.
