Cardinal defeated by No. 3 Warriors

Class 1A No. 3 Van Buren handed Cardinal its sixth straight loss by the score of 10-1 Wednesday in Eldon.

The Warriors were led offensively by sophomore Will Mertens, who went 2-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and three RBIs. Austin Bartholomew, Tanner Smith and Garrett Saunders each smacked two hits as well. Noah Whitten finished the game with two RBIs.

Tyson Sprouse pitched the first four innings and shut down Cardinal’s offense. Conner McElderry was able to drive in Brennon Elder to score the Comets’ only run.

Elder and Chase Courtney both stole bases for the Comets.

Cardinal (17-12) hosts Winfield-Mount Union tonight. The postseason begins Saturday when the Comets travel to Eddyville-Blakesburg.

Van Buren (29-2) will host Highland tonight.
