Tuesday was Senior Night at Cardinal and the Comets’ volleyball team sent their lone elder, Peyton VanBlaricom, out with an emotional tribute.

Various players took the microphone, sharing lifelong memories made with their leader before hosting West Burlington in their regular-season finale. Coach Jerald Harter’s team struggled to recover from the roller coaster of emotions, falling in game one 25-13. Coach Harter explains what happened.

“Volleyball is supposed to go back and forth, and the team that gets a run, usually wins,” he said. “We give up too many runs, and we can’t afford to be a team that does that every game.”

Sets two and three were more of the same with West Burlington taking them 25-14 and 25-16, respectively.

Statistically, the Comets were led by several sophomores, including Maddie Cloke’s 12 kills and three blocks, Maddy Langford’s 13 assists and Rachel Lewman’s 19 digs. The senior VanBlaricom had three kills. Up next for 8-21 Cardinal is a first round playoff matchup versus Sigourney on Tuesday.

Saturdays are when area high school volleyball teams hit the road for high-volume, high-caliber, competition in the form of tournaments.

This past weekend, Cardinal traveled to Bloomfield where Davis County hosted several schools.

The Comets were 2-3 overall, but were swept 2-0 in their first two matches vs Davis County and WACO. Cardinal recovered in their third match of the day, beating Centerville 2-1, but fell in their fourth match to newly built Iowa City Liberty 2-0.

Coach Jerald Harter’s squad played brilliantly in their final match of the weekend, beating Albia 2-0.
