Cedar Rapids drive-in demolition coming soon

Sep 18, 2013

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) — A landmark A&W restaurant in Cedar Rapids will soon be demolished, but it’s less certain how the city will use the growing amount of green space created by the destruction of more than 1,000 flood-damage structures.

KCRG-TV reports demolition of the drive-in could begin today. The city has demolished 122 other commercial buildings and 1,125 residential building following record flooding in 2008.

All those demolitions have left lots of empty space in the city’s Time Check neighborhood.

Doug Wilson, a Cedar Rapids project manager, says the state is allowing $1.6 million in flood buyout funds to pay for removing streets and other utilities from areas that can’t be developed.

Wilson says current thinking calls for building recreational areas, such as baseball diamonds, in areas where homes were demolished.
