Child struck by car in Washington

May 09, 2014

WASHINGTON, Iowa (GTNS) – A child on a bicycle was struck by a car Wednesday afternoon, sending the child to the emergency room.

The incident occurred in the 300 block of West Madison Street in Washington.

According to the report from the Washington County Communications Center, the child was transported by Washington County Ambulance to the Washington County Hospital and Clinics. On Thursday morning, Washington Police Chief Greg Goodman said that he had not heard an update on the hospitalized child.

The report said that Trevja Karugo of Washington was cited for failure to yield upon making a left turn. A state accident report will be filed.

Goodman said that bicycle accidents are not common, but that motorists should always keep an eye out to ensure an accident won’t occur.

“Things are getting nicer, and more bicycles and motorcycles are getting out on the roads,” Goodman said. “Motorists need to pay close attention to their driving and what is going on around them.”

May is also national Motorcycle Awareness Month. Due to the smaller size of a motorcycle or a bicycle when compared to a car, motorists are asked to always look for motorcyclists or bikers while driving.
