Chuck Grassley should resign

By David Sands | Dec 07, 2017

To the editor:

For heaven’s sake, Senator Grassley. You are quoted in The Des Moines Register as saying:

“I think not having the estate tax recognizes the people that are investing, as opposed to those that are just spending every darn penny they have, whether it’s on booze or women or movies.”

This statement demonstrates how out of touch you are with your constituents, a third of whom struggle to put food on their plates, keep a roof over their heads and pay the bills for essentials such as heating, water and clothing. They struggle because wages are too low, even as many work more than one job. Your remark is an insult to my hard-working neighbors. It is arrogant, untrue and mean-spirited pure political scapegoating.

You should resign for holding this shameful attitude towards hard-working Iowans, for suggesting that people are not wealthy because of bad habits, and for voting for the Republican tax scam known as a tax cut bill, a measure that will cause further financial harm to us while furthering the financial wellbeing of your wealthy friends and donors.
