‘Cirque Mechanics: Birdhouse Factory’ Sunday at Sondheim

May 12, 2014

“Cirque Mechanics: Birdhouse Factory,” a nostalgic tale set in a 1930s depression era widget factory, transformed by the resourcefulness and creativity of the American worker, sets up shop at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts.

Enter the most unlikely setting for a circus, a factory – where the workers are the acrobats and machines are circus props. Spectators will watch a contortionist perform on a turntable powered by unicyclists, be captivated by the trapeze artist flying high thanks to the spins of an acrobat inside a giant gear-like wheel and be stunned when the trampoline wall artists defy the laws of physics by virtually flying and walking on air. All the while they will be giggling at the antics of the comedic characters, impressed by the acro-dancing and enchanted by the story of laughter, love, flight and birdhouses.

See how a woeful widget factory becomes a frolicsome funhouse as assembly workers become ecstatic with aerial ambition, crane operators twist and transmute into strange and silly shapes, and gravity-defying mechanics ignite endless “oohs” and “aahs” when unexpected inspiration flies into their world.

Under the helm of Chris Lashua, creator, director and former Cirque du Soleil star recognized worldwide for his expertise with the German Wheel act in “Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam Cirque Mechanics,” transforms the Sondheim stage into an extraordinary and wonder-filled “Birdhouse Factory.” Featuring veterans of the Pickle Family and Moscow Circuses, “Birdhouse Factory” uses a decidedly fresh aesthetic to showcase their high-flying, mindboggling talent. “Birdhouse Factory” has wowed audiences worldwide from a critically acclaimed off Broadway run and U.S. tour to a highly successful European tour and performances in Dubai and Hong Kong.

Tickets for “Cirque Mechanics: Birdhouse Factory” are $34 for Zone 1, $30 for Zone 2, $23 for Zone 3, $15 for Zone 4 and youth. Tickets are available at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center Ticket Office, 472-2787 and online at www.FairfieldACC.com.

“Cirque Mechanics: Birdhouse Factory” is part of the 2013-14 Sondheim Center Artist Series: Continuing the Momentum.
