Civil War Experience planned in Bonaparte

Jun 06, 2013

BONAPARTE – A Civil War Experience will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in downtown Bonaparte.

Established to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the focus of the event is to educate and enlighten families on the era and recognize those who served.

Bonaparte Main Street will sponsor a horse-drawn wagon to provide transportation around Bonaparte and through the Bonaparte Cemetery.

Re-enactors will be camped along the Des Moines River to offer an insight to conditions and weapons of Civil War soldiers. Nauvoo on the Road will have demonstrations and games, and Krabill’s Kritters petting zoo also will be in the historic Riverfront Park.

At Bonaparte Cemetery, the Bonaparte American Legion will display the Avenue of Flags and mark the graves of Civil War veterans with 34-star flags.

The Bonaparte Historical Society will open its museum from 9 a.m. to noon. Its displays will feature artifacts and photographs from Civil War-era Bonaparte.

Bride dolls dressed in costumes representing the 1860s will be on display for voting at Waterfront Place. The winning doll will be returned to its designer, and the other dolls will be sold at silent auction during Bonaparte’s Autumn Fest Oct. 12-13 in the Bonaparte Opera House.

Bonaparte Pottery will be open for tours at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Demonstrations using 1875 molds will show how pottery was made. A wine tasting is planned, also.

A whiskers-growing contest is set for 1 p.m., with prizes given to: best longest, well-groomed; best Civil War goatee with or without mustache; best Civil War lamb chops, mutton chops; best shaggy, badly groomed beard and mustache; and longest well-groomed handlebar mustache. Entry is free, and there is no age limit, but Civil War-era authenticity is preferred.

The Iowa Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee of the Iowa State Historical Society endorses the event.

For information, call Bonaparte Main Street at 319-592-3400 or visit the website www.villagesofvanburen.com and click on the event calendar.
